Scared Mechanics Ep. 2: Strangest Dream

“Ideas are like fish.

If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re beautiful.”

- David Lynch

I still have my battered copy of the book.

David Lynch is not only one of my favourite filmmakers, but I will be forever grateful to him for turning me on to meditation.

His 2006 book, ‘Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity’, was a rumination on his discovery of the practice of transcendental meditation and how it’s expanded his consciousness and led to his best ideas.

His analogy of using meditation to ‘dive within’ and catch the bigger fish of creative ideas deep within has stuck with me ever since. Good ideas never come to me in a busy environment. I need to get out for a walk in nature or get some time to sit still and meditate, to open up the inner channels, to let the ‘big fish’ ideas come to the surface.

This month’s show is a late tribute to David Lynch, following his departure to the red-curtained stage in the sky earlier this year—a humble soul with extraordinary creativity. I owe him quite a lot for writing that book in particular. It found me at a particularly rough period in my life and was one of the lights that led me out of the dark.

All tracks in the first hour have the ‘Lynchian’ vibe. That particular mix of dark, menacing sounds, with distorted vocals, juxtaposed against 1950s pop.

The second hour is inspired by Boys Noize's set, opening for Nine Inch Nails on their tour. Dark electro and new beat sounds played under red lights; it struck me as what a nightclub in a Lynch Universe would feel like.

As ever, much power to èist radio elves for all the buttons pushed to bring this show to you.
