When you're at the client's kitchen table discussing a project, you feel the importance of getting their new business logo right.

You can't get a more personal setting. Ground floor to a new business idea that has family at its heart.

Jonathan and Kathanna are embarking on a journey to establish the Island's first coffee roasting company. One of the first steps was to design a logo that aligned with their vision.

In their kitchen, over a few smooth cups of coffee, we discussed their positioning, their influences and the visual aesthetics that appealed to them.

A big help early on was their Heather Isle tartan pattern, which quickly established the brand colours and a subsequent pattern for use alongside the logo.

Counterprint logo books used for vibes and feels

A note on moodboards.

I have a large collection of logo design books built over the years. A lot of which are from the excellent Counterprint Books. These two books, ‘Modern Heraldry Vol 2’ and ‘Food & Drink Logos’, in particular, are well-worn (as you can tell from the picture!). They helped me get into the ‘vibe’ of the logo with some beautifully curated logo design examples within the food and drink industry. I find them to be a far more precise source of inspiration than browsing on Pinterest.

I gathered a full brief and I set to work crafting ideas into presentable logo formats.

It was clear, when I considered iconography, that the 'heather' in the name should be featured as part of the logo. It has obvious connections to the Island, but it's also organic, like their roasted beans.

Early developments of final icon

I presented three initial visions centred around the heather, ranging from a niche, super-minimal style to a crest-style, populist approach.

We reached a strong point early on, where we knew the route to take, and we were fine-tuning the details to optimise the look.

Framing the final logo in a similar style to the passing place signs found all over the Island put the seal on it.

All logo and pattern assets were delivered, and they were ready to launch.

Best of luck to Jonathan and Kathanna in their adventures with roasted coffee beans.

It’s been* a pleasure working with you.

*So tempted to spell that as ‘bean’ but that’s the old me. The new me is trying to break free from cheesy puns.
